The Art of Upwards Advocacy!
The PMI Portugal Conference ART & SCIENCE of PROJECT LEADERSHIP took place on the 12th and 13th October 2023 in Lisbon, and it was magnificent!
We’re grateful to Georges Buzaglo that accepted the challenge to bring an interactive dynamic to practice the art of upward advocacy. Effective pushback is about giving feedback to your boss to discover obstacles to productivity and create conditions to enable organizational performance.
The room layout was changed during lunchtime and the group of 160 people distributed in groups. To energize all after lunch, we followed ‘clear’ instructions and, in most cases, did not deliver the expected results. How effective is your communication? What role play assumptions in your day-to-day?
Georges reflected on the opportunity to connect, reframe, paraphrase, question where different questions – open, closed, high-yield, serve different purposes. It’s important to integrate it all as we plan and deliver feedback based on facts.
We role played and improved the way we communicate. To do so, we removed the judgmental tone and chose to think and verbalize the feedback in a constructive way. We also experienced the impact of communication on others during negotiation and dialogue without body language and any sense of active listening.
