Sustainability to Shape the Future: Projects as Catalysts for Meaningful Change
Lucila Dotto, PMI Global Head of Sustainability, PMI-GPM Joint Venture Lead
In a world facing unprecedented environmental, social, and economic challenges, sustainability is no longer a choice — it is a responsibility. The good news? Projects hold the power to drive this change. Far beyond timelines and deliverables, projects can serve as catalysts to make sustainability not an add-on, but the very way we work — woven into the culture of our organizations, our communities, and our impact on the world.
Sustainability doesn’t always begin with sweeping reform. It starts small — with a pilot initiative, a green procurement strategy, a rethink of a packaging design, or a team-wide energy reduction goal. These seeds of action, when managed intentionally, can scale into transformative impact. And that transformation is more than scope, schedule, and budget — it’s about value. Real, perceived, and sustained.
To manage a project with a sustainability lens is to reframe success. It’s asking: What value does this initiative create — not only for our stakeholders, but for society at large? It’s ensuring that our projects leave a legacy, not a footprint.
As Project leaders we must go beyond traditional measures of success. This means taking ownership for outcomes even after handover, understanding long-term environmental and social implications, and continuously reassessing as the context evolves. Sustainability is dynamic — so our project frameworks must be too.
Crucially, perception matters. A sustainable project must not only be valuable but also be seen as valuable. Managing stakeholder perceptions and aligning expectations is a strategic responsibility. When people believe in the purpose of a project, they support, advocate, and replicate it.
The future demands that we rethink our roles as project leaders — not just as implementers, but as the ripple that sets transformation in motion. By aligning every project with sustainable principles and measuring success in terms of long-term value and resilience, we shape more than deliverables — we shape the future.
Together We Can Aim Higher. Let’s start strong, think big, and lead boldly. The journey begins now.
